Experiment: DYMIO

OMNIDIRECTIONAL IONOSPHERIC MASS SPECTROMETER

Main scientific objectives:Investigation of the dynamics of the Martian Ionosphere and of its interaction with the Solar Wind.

DYMIO allows to measure:
  • main parameters of the ionospheric plasma: ion densities, temperatures and velocities.
  • angular and energy spectrum of superthermal ions up to 500 eV in the boundary layer between the ionosphere and the Solar Wind.
  • detailed mass composition of the ionospheric plasma up to mass 44 amu.

  • Main characteristics:
    Field of View 4x3,14
    Sensitivitybetter than 0.1 ion/cm3
    Time resolution 0.5 s
    Mass range 1-44 a.m.u.
Number density range from less than 10-1 to 105 ions/cm3, accuracy 10%
    Temperature rangefrom 500° K to 10 000° K, accuracy 10%
    Velocity range from 0.1 to 4 km/s, accuracy 10%
    Data flow 1 to 2 kb/s
    Mass [kg]7,2
